The GOP does seem to have consolidated its support in the South and Western Plains, but those are not electorally rich parts of the country. I really think they'll need to expand their base (in other words, become a bit more centrist) or risk losing election after election. Conservative rhetoric just doesn't play as well in Hazleton as it does in Hattiesburg.

-----

Thomas,

Well, Michael Steele and Lynn Swan seem to be emerging as Black Republican leaders. But until Republicans are able to figure out if they want Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, or Newt Gingrich to be the head of the party, I am not so sure this will matter.

As for the Dems, I do believe that their coalition is so large now that it will probably split into the liberals and the centrists. I'd look for the Blue Dogs to swell their ranks and become the true power brokers. They won't sacrifice the party name, however, because they will have far more power in Washington starting in January than at any time since maybe 1993.

I would think that if you were a conservative Afri...

I would think that if you were a conservative African-American or Hispanic person with a public policy background, this would be your time to rise rapidly.
